Crime and Gangster

Crime and Gangster films have been fan favorites for decades. Some of the most famous films have come from this genre. Movies like The Godfather and Scarface. Or TV Shows like Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. We continue to see the media world reference these films because it was been a rich part in the film making industry.

This genre has become so popular due to its target audience which is predominately males in the age range of 15-40. I believe that this specific target audience connects with the film more than any other people would. I think that watching these types of movies sparks that sort of rebel inside of them.

The content in this genre is exactly as the title of the genre. It quite literally is about crime and gangsters. For example, in one of the most famous crime movies, The Wolf of Wall Street, we follow a stock-broker who becomes money and power hungry. To accomplish his goals of wealth and success he would promote penny stocks through intensive marketing which drove up the price of these stocks. Then, he would instruct his team of investors to dump the stock making him millions of dollars over time. Government corruption, fraud, money laundering, drugs, etc. are the type of content show in this genre.

The production techniques for these genres are usually the same. They tend to use a lot of close ups or extreme close ups to show the true emotions of the characters. Some usually have a narrator that is telling the story as you are watching it, such as Goodfellas. The colors are often very dark, grey and black are the most common.

When you think of a gangster what do you think about? I think about godfathers, goodfellas and wiseguys, toughs who talk in patois heavily accented in the dese-dem-dose tones of the Northeast and dress in sleeveless undershirts and pinstriped suits. The cornucopia of Corleone wannabes appears in commercials and print ads and on World Wide Web sites pitching a variety of products and services in addition to promoting films and television series with organized-crime themes. These gangsters have been marketed a specific way for years to be easily recognizable.

The movie, The Godfather, perfectly portrays the genre of crime and gangster. This movie is about an Italian family in the Mafia, living in New York. The film focuses on the Corleone family, which is one of the head five families in the mafia. The main character is Michael Corleone and we experience his character development throughout the film. The film has no other crime but murder. There is a lot of mystery involved because you never know who is going to come for you, or turn on you. In the mafia it can be your own brother who does it. The film portrays the ins and outs of gangster crime perfectly.

Another movie is Scarface. In Scarface we follow a Cuban refugee, who goes by the name of Antonio Montana, seeking an opportunity in Miami. But the opportunity he is given is one of drugs, sex, and murder. While working for these people he eventually becomes power hungry and decides to run things on his own. He becomes so obsessed with money and his work that he loses sight of everything he loves, which eventually results in his down fall.
